Parts Of Yale Remain On Lockdown After Reports Of Man With Gun On Campus

Parts of Yale University remain on lockdown after confirmed reports of a gunman on campus this morning. Police and other authorities are continuing a room-by-room investigation of the campus and dormitories.

Yale’s Emergency Management service confirmed a previous report that said there was a man with a gun near Old Campus in New Haven, where many freshmen dormitories are based.

The original statement said that the report was unconfirmed after an anonymous tip from a payphone. Students have been told to shelter in place.

A New Haven Police Department spokesman told reporters around 1:00 p.m. that the campus lockdown came in response to a short phone call from a man saying his roommate was coming to “shoot people” at Yale’s campus. The initial caller was not identified as a Yale student.

According to one Yale Daily News reporter’s Twitter account, New Haven police have arrested a person on campus without a gun, but are continuing their search for the reported gunman.

Multiple New Haven media outlets were initially reporting that the lockdown came in response to an anonymous phone call from a Yale student worried their roommate would “shoot up” the school.

Many students are currently away from campus as the school is on Thanksgiving break, but Yale Daily News’ Twitter account reports that a SWAT team has been seen near Old Campus. Students are being advised of the situation using in-room PAs and text message alerts.

Neither New Haven Police Department nor Yale Public Safety were able to provide more information when contacted by Business Insider. State police are at the scene but Yale PD are believed to be leading the investigation.

According to the Yale Daily News’ Cross Campus blog, no shooting and no injuries have been recorded yet.
