These incredibly beautiful images of frozen sand formations on the shores of Lake Michigan, are the work of a Western Michigan University grad who braved blizzard conditions last weekend to capture the shots. Whilst exploring the shores around St. Joseph, Michigan, he came across a truly amazing phenomenon. He found dozens of small sand sculptures that look like they are from another planet. They had formed from frozen sand being sculpted in the wind. Nowicki said he first spotted the interesting formations once three years ago, but a relatively inexperienced photographer at the time, he had trouble capturing the images in such challenging conditions.
This time, he had a better idea of how to tackle the shots when he saw the formations on the beach at about 6:30 p.m. Valentines Day, February 14.
“The photos were all taken at different exposures,” he said, some that evening and some the following morning at shortly after sunrise. You can see more of his photography here.
